I bought my Airdyne in 1990. During the first 5 years of ownership, I rode it approximately 11 miles per day without any problems. I recently started using it again after approximately 15 years of it sitting in my Houston, TX garage. Even wtih all of the heat it has been subjected to, the unit performed like the day I stopped using it 15 years earlier. I have used it now for about 7 months and am back up to an average of 8 miles per day. I am simply amazed that it has not needed any repairs or adjustments.

Comments about Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike:
My husband used to get up early (5:00am) and walk 2 miles every morning, whether it was dark, cold outside, or he could hear animals running around while he walked. Now he gets up every morning and rides for 30 mins., going 6-7 miles or more each time- I don't have to worry about him exercising in the dark (and getting hit by a car), or in the cold (having to breathe in cold air wasn't good for him), or wild animals- no worries of him walking across skunks, racoons, bears, buck deer, or coyotes.

Comments about Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike:
After much research and a few attempts with other MUCH more expensive stationary bikes, I discovered the Schwinn Airdyne. At approximately 25-30% the cost of other leading brands "professional" quality bikes, this is far and away the most reliable and durable bike out there - and not by chance. Close examination of the bike compared to others reveals the Airdyne uses tried-and-true direct chain link technology (aka standard bicycle), and no electromechanical resistance clamps (brakes that wear down) or problematic squeeze type sensors to check your heart rate (the first thing to go). All bearings are sealed, and resistance is generated by air. In short, you or any bike shop can fix this in the unlikely event it had a problem. YES!!
Ok, enough about my primary reason for considering it (price and durability). Here's why it's a keeper; quite simply, my wife and I love the workout it gives. The upper body arm attachments are awesome, and trust me, 10 minutes on this and you'll feel it! If you're out of shape, 5 minutes will get you going, and then get ready to start losing weight and getting into shape! If you want a harder workout, pedal faster. The intuitive computer display allows you to accurate monitor the difficulty level, distance, and time. Oh, and the computer is also easily replacable should it eventually malfunction. Try that with any of the other bikes!
Cons:
1) It's loud, which is the nature of wind resistance. We have a pair of over the ear type ear protection, and the problem was solved. My wife is going to get some decent over the ear headphones to listen to music
2) The installation is moderately tricky; if you're handy with a wrench and screwdriver and can read a manual, no worries here. DEFINITELY download the manual to a PC, Laptop, or iPad as the included one is too small to see clearly. However, I was able to zoom in on the PC/iPad and then problem solved. Metric and Imperial wrenches are needed, and no, you won't have to adjust chains or balance the wheel as the drivetrain is fully assembled in the box. Basically you're putting the pedals, stand, and arm/hand attachments on. Allow 45-120 minutes.
3)Not a lot of bells and whistles; what it does, it does well, but don't expect it connect to the internet, upload your workout profile, or interface with your TV. Again, the computer console is effective and nothing more than you need. We're going to order the cheststrap w/telemetry cable to track this, but it's not really necessary
Ok, in closing, you can't go wrong with the Airdyne (unless you need an absolutely silent stationary bike). There's a reason the NFL has them on the sidelines during professional football games - quick, effective workouts and reliabilty, all at a great price point.

Comments about Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike:
I bought my first Schwinn Airdyne in 1984. It has been, by far, the best piece of fitness equipment I've ever purchased. It is an extremely well made piece of equipment. Today, I "retired" my old Airdyne and purchased a new one. Hated to say goodbye to my old friend, but it was time. I had 9800 miles on the old one. After all those miles, the "pivot arm" bolt broke, and I was unable to find a replacement part. The new model's pivot arm bolt was a slightly different size. But, I figure I got my money's worth out of the Airdyne many years ago. And, why mess with a good thing -- so I bought another one. The new one appears to be just as well made as the old one, so I'm anticipating that it will last me many more years.

Comments about Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike:
I have been been getting a good workout using the AIRDYNE daily for over 11 years. The only reason for buying a new one, is the old one gave up after only 33,300 miles. These are well designed and sturdy units. They get between 12 and twenty miles a day put on them without beating up my body. I highly recommend the SCHWINN AIRDYNE BIKE.

Comments about Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike:
I am now on my 3rd bike---the oldest one is still in use at other house 6 months each year. It has over 70,000miles on it with the only repairs being a couple sets of handles and arm bars. I had the pedal crank and sprocket come loose (I've seen this issue on another report)on a second bike that has about 16,000 mils on it. I've used JB Weld to temporarily repair it and it worked for a couple hundred miles. Since the part is a single unit, I'm now trying a permanent weld. Also with the newer softer seats I notice numbness in the private area, an issue that oters have commented on. I stand for several rotation every few minutes and that take care of the problem. I ride 25 to 30 miles every day which takes about 90 minutes. A great piece of equipment that helps me control my weight.

Comments about Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike:
We bought ours in 1995. My wife and I use it mainly during the winter months and especially when we can't get outside to walk or run. We each ride about 4X/week. It's a fabulous full body workout. This year we bought a set of wireless ear muffs style headphones so we can watch and listen to the tv without hearing the bike noise. They have worked very well.

Comments about Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike:
I have used it continuously since 1980. Runs like a top. Age 62, with chronic susceptibility to low back problems, this machine is the perfect warm up first thing in the morning. Hop on and ride for a while. Mine came with a reading stand (free special promotion in 1980!). In the past two years I have come up with what is for me the perfect solution. Books tended to wiggle too much to make reading easy, and the little arms to hold them down were long gone, but my iPad is the perfect reading device, with its own, variable light source and my ability to make the print as large as needed to read without glasses. Now the final piece I just discovered: add in a high end pair of over-the-ear headphones (to plug in to the iPad) and listen to music while reading, and the noise is no longer an issue. 31 years of continuous use. So far, so good.

Q:
Can I use it as a spinning bike? Specifically can I stand upright while pedaling (position 2) and hunched-over (position 3)? Will the handle bars move if I am just pedaling (not working out my upper body)?
Also, is the handle bar height adjustable?
Thanks.Asked on 3/28/2011 by Anonymous1 answer
CUSTOMER CARE
A:
The Schwinn Airdyne bike cannot be used as a spinning bike. Our handlebars are constantly moving and it would be hard to use them as support while standing in position 1 or 2.
Additionally, the handlebar height is not adjustable.Answered on 4/15/2011 by Rick from NLS_WHQ

Hello. Here are the instructions from the manual: "The timer utilizes a 1 1/2 volt, watch-type button battery. (LR44, A 76 or equivalent.). Using a phillips screwdriver, turn the battery cover located on the face of the timer 1/4 turn counterclockwise. Replace the battery with the negative (-) side facing down. Replace the battery cover by lining up the slots and tabs and turning 1/4 turn counterclockwise. The battery should last up to two years under normal use."Answered on 3/18/2011 by RC from Nautilus WHQ, Vancouver, WAA:
Hi Greg,
My bike is a bit older, but the battery compartment is underneath the control panel. Mine opens by pushing lightly on a protruding plastic piece and the battery module is easily removed. I hope yours is similar.
